Solutions to facilitate traffic congestion urged

Manama, July 4 (BNA): In implementation of the directives of HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Prime Minister, to develop urgent solutions to reduce traffic congestion on Bahrain’s main road network, Minister of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning, Issam bin Abdullah Khalaf, announced that the ministry has launched the development project of the intersection of Al-Mahzoura Street and Al-Istiklal Street.

The minister said the action would facilitate traffic coming from Al-Mahzoura Street into Istiklal Street by increasing the number of lanes on the latter to five.

He showed that statistics indicate that the number of vehicles travelling on Al-Istiklal Street are about 50 thousand in both directions daily, an average of 3200 vehicles per hour at peak time. He added the project will reduce traffic congestion by 28%, it also includes the improvement of street lighting.

He noted the transport sector in Bahrain gets special attention, for it is strongly linked to the sustainable development that its success depends on a sound road infrastructure.

He explained that the project is part of a comprehensive road network development plan to keep a breast of the increase of number of people and vehicles, as well as the urban expansion.
